Maternal phenylketonuria: experiences from the United Kingdom.

Charles Dent was one of the first physicians to recognize the teratogenic effects of maternal phenylalanine (Phe) on the fetus in 1956. This article describes the clinical experiences of women with phenylketonuria (PKU) within the unit that was established by Dent in the United Kingdom. Between 1977 and 2002, 79 infants were born to women with PKU. Of the 79, 18 (23%) were conceived while the w...

Aspartame consumption and incidence of hematopoietic and brain cancers.

To the Editors: Lim et al. (1), using data from the 1995 to 1996 NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, tested the hypothesis that aspartame consumption is associated with risk of hematopoietic cancers or gliomas (2). However, inappropriateness of subjects and study protocols renders any conclusions drawn from the Lim et al. study meaningless. Basic flaws are each significant enough to invalidate the ...

The findings, discussed in the context of sensory-deprivation and sensory-restriction research, supported the...

Metabolism of aspartame in monkeys.

Aspartame (SC-18862, 3-amino-N-(a-carboxyphenethyl)succinarnic acid, methyl ester; the methyl ester of aspartyl-phenylalanine ) is a sweetening agent that organoleptically has about 180 times the sweetness of sugar. Because it so closely resembles naturally occurring dipeptides, it was believed that it would be digested in a similar manner. To show this, the metabolism of [14C]aspartame labeled...
